College Admission Tests

If you're getting ready to apply to college, you're probably hearing a lot about various standardized admission test such as the SAT, SAT Subject Tests, ACT, PSAT, and AP tests. Here's a quick overview of what you'll need to know.

The SAT is one of the best known college admissions tests particular for schools on the East and West coasts. Most schools will accept your SAT scores for admissions and to award scholarships. Learn more about the SAT

The PSAT is great practice for the SAT. Many students take a practice PSAT in October of their sophomore year, but it's the PSAT you take in October of your junior year that counts for the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. The ACT is another admissions test that is growing in popularity and has a reputation for being a little easier than others. Another advantage is that you can take the test several times and choose which score to submit. Most colleges will accept either the ACT or the SAT. Graduate School Tests

The Graduate Record Examination (GRE). Off to graduate school? Many schools consider GRE scores when determining merit-based grants, fellowships, and teaching or research assignments. The test has 3 sections: Quantitative, Verbal, and Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA). Learn more about the GRE


The Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) is is a 4-hour computer-adaptive test required by most business schools. Your performance on previous questions determines which questions come next. New York State Specialized High School Test


The Regents Exam. The New York State Mathematics A Regents Examination is the mathematics test that all students in New York State must pass in order to graduate from high school. Those students wishing to pursue an Advanced Regents Diploma must pass the Mathematics B Regents Examination. Learn more about the Regents Exam


The SHSAT Exam. The New York City Specialized High Schools Admissions Test is an exam 8th and 9th graders take as part of their applications to six New York City Specialized High Schools. Learn more about the SHSAT. These include:

Other Tests

The ISEE (Independent School Entrance Examination) and the SSAT (Secondary School Admission Test ) are used for admission to private middle schools / high schools and boarding schools / military schools respectively.
