Choosing the Right Tutor for You
|Below we have listed some of the essential that an excellent tutor should possess:|
When selecting a private tutor, we strongly suggest that you make your decision based on quality rather than price. Of course, there are always going to be cheaper tutors out there, but rather like most other things in life, one generally only gets what one pays for. Below are a few important criteria that you should look out for when choosing the right tutor for you:
You would be amazed by how many "tutors" are out there offering to teach subjects in which they are not fully qualified. Some have not even studied the subject at College level. A poor tutor can actually do more harm than good and end up destroying a student's confidence. Hence, make sure the tutor has an advanced degree in his or her chosen field, preferably from a top university.
Dr. Donnelly's academic qualifications are second to none and include:
- Ph.D. in Mathematical Science from Oxford University
- Honors degree in Mathematics and Physics
- The highest grades (99th percentile) in standardized tests
- 20 years of experience teaching both the math and verbal sections of each of the major standardized tests.
Just because a person is gifted in a particular subject does not mean he or she can actually teach. An excellent tutor should also have extensive teaching experience at all different levels, in order to be able to clearly explain each concept to the student in a number of different ways.
Dr. Donnelly has over 20 years of teaching experience including:
- Ex-college professor at two separate U.S. Universities
- Founder of Tutors of Oxford (Hong Kong) - 1993-1998
- Founder of Tutors of Oxford (New York City) - 2000 - present
- Four years as a High School math & physics teacher
- 20 years of private tutoring experience for both the math and verbal sections of each of the major standardized tests.
Many tutors work "part-time" and are simply tutoring in order to help to pay the bills or to tide them over in between their actual careers. Hence, it is not surprising that with so many other distractions, many of these tutors do not display the same level of dedication and focus that one would expect from a dedicated professional full-time tutor.
With a Ph.D. from Oxford University by the age of 25, Dr. Donnelly could have chosen to pursue any career that he wanted. His love of teaching and helping students to achieve their academic goals led Dr. Donnelly to chose to set up his own standardized test preparation center and become a full time professional tutor. Dr. Donnelly is now considered by many leading academics to be one of the finest tutors and standardized test preparation specialists in the country.
The tutor must help each student to feel comfortable enough to ask questions and make mistakes without feeling self-conscious during the lesson. Hence, the tutor must be patient and pleasant-natured while at the same time encouraging the student to take an active part in each lesson.
Over the years, Dr. Donnelly's patient, professional manner has helped literally hundreds of students increase their confidence in the subject and significantly improve their test scores. We are confident that he can do the same for you.
Private lessons with Dr. Donnelly are available either online via Skype for those students living outside of the New York City area or in-person at our Upper East Side location for those students living here in Manhattan.
