Choosing the Right Tutor for You |
|
| Below we have listed a few important qualities that an excellent tutor should possess: |
When selecting a private tutor, we strongly suggest that you make your decision based on quality rather than price. Of course, there are always going to be cheaper tutors out there, but rather like most other things in life, one generally only gets what one pays for. Below are a few important criteria that you should look out for when choosing the right tutor for you:
Excellent Academic Qualifications
You would be amazed by how many "tutors" are out there offering to teach subjects in which they are not fully qualified. Some have not even studied the subject at College level. A poor tutor can actually do more harm than good and end up destroying a student's confidence. Hence, make sure the tutor has an advanced degree in his or her chosen field, preferably from a top university.
Dr. Donnelly's academic qualifications are second to none and include:
- Ph.D. in Mathematical Science from Oxford University
- Honors degree in Mathematics and Physics
- The highest grades (99th percentile) in standardized tests
- 20 years of experience teaching both the math and verbal sections of each of the major standardized tests.
Just because a person is gifted in a particular subject does not mean he or she can actually teach it. An excellent tutor should also have extensive teaching experience at all different levels, in order to be able to clearly explain each concept to the student in a number of different ways.
Dr. Donnelly has over 20 years of teaching experience including:
- Ex-college professor at two separate U.S. Universities
- Co-founder of Tutors of Oxford (Hong Kong)
- Four years as a High School Math & Physics teacher
- 20 years private tutoring experience for both the math and verbal sections of each of the major standardized tests.
Patient professional teaching style
The tutor must help the student to feel comfortable enough to ask questions and make mistakes without feeling self-conscious during the lesson. Hence, the tutor must be patient and pleasant-natured while at the same time encouraging the student to take an active part in each lesson.
Over the years, Dr. Donnelly's patient, professional manner has helped literally hundreds of students increase their confidence in the subject and significantly improve their test scores. We are confident that he can do the same for you.
Private lessons with Dr. Donnelly are available either online via Skype for those students living outside of the New York City area or in-person at our East Midtown location for those students living here in Manhattan.
