Student studying for the MCAT exam

Medical College Admission Test (MCAT)

The MCAT (Medical College Admission Test) is required for admission to most medical schools. This rigorous exam will test your knowledge of science concepts including Physics, Chemistry and Biology and well as your Verbal Reasoning and Writing skills.

Getting into your top-choice medical school is a highly competitive process and so you'll want to prepare thoroughly for the MCAT.

The MCAT exam is unlike any other standardized test. Even the most gifted students will often score poorly on this test unless they are aware of the correct approach to taking the MCAT.

Luckily, Dr. Donnelly can teach you the correct approach for each type of question that will appear on the MCAT. This will significantly increase your chances of getting the required score to attend the school of your choice. Private lessons with Dr. Donnelly are available either online via Skype for those students living outside of the New York City area or in-person at our East Midtown location for those students living here in Manhattan..

Dr. Donnelly's recent student testimonials

"I just got back my scores and got a 39. I had a 14 in PS, 13 in BS and 12 in VR. Thanks so much for all your help!!!" - Apoorva S., student (NYC)

"Dr. Donnelly helped me build my confidence, which improved my test taking substantially. I'm no longer afraid of Physics because he taught me strategies to break down complicated problems into simple concepts. He also reviewed concepts I didn't know in depth, asking questions to make sure I understood. I strongly recommend Dr. Donnelly, he made test preparation enjoyable and fulfilling." - Mora V. - student, NYC

"Dr. Donnelly's private tutoring stands apart from ofther mainstream/commercial review programs because he isolates an individual's weaknesses and tailors a successful review and test-taking strategy that conforms to an individual's needs--and not the masses. Dr. Donnelly was able to quickly understand and dissect my thought process in order to help me break old habits and establish stronger test-taking skills so I could get that higher score I wanted" - Jacqui S. - 2012

"Dr. Donnelly is a wonderful teacher. He is quick to pinpoint weaknesses  and, in many cases, turn them into strengths.  He always has a structured lesson plan and pertinent homework assignments and puts aside time in the lesson to go over "trouble problems" from the previous lesson. I highly recommend taking a prep course with him. His patience, humor, and kindheartedness makes an otherwise uncomfortable standardized test almost enjoyable" - Mia P. - student, NYC

"Dr. Donnelly has a real knack for explaining topics in plain English and for making them come alive with real-life examples. I would encourage anyone who needs to get up to speed in their test preparation o give Dr Donnelly a call. You won't regret it! - Mike H., - NYC

"Dr. Donnelly is patient and supportive and is clear when explaining questions that were challenging to me.  He also urged me to work out questions on my own, which was extremely helpful.  He created an atmosphere in which I looked forward to the challenge of each section on the practice tests, and I definitely felt more confident taking the test.  If I need to prepare for another standardized test, I will definitely contact Dr. Donnelly" - Pauline E. - student, NYC

"Dr. Donnelly's rates are very reasonable, his location convenient and he was able to accommodate my varied schedule. After a handful of sessions, in which he patiently worked with me to target the specific areas I could improve in given the limited time, I was able to reach the needed score to start in September, thanks to Dr. Donnelly". - Clare C., - student (NYC)

"Great teacher! Great lessons! Dr Donnelly loves to teach, is patient and motivates you to put the necessary work and attention to really improve your test scores. I don't think I would have succeeded without his help." - Denisse A., student, NYC

"I rate Stuart as an excellent teacher. He inspires the brilliant Physicists, but also encourages those students who may find certain topics quite difficult. His lessons are well structured...and it is obvious that he thoroughly enjoys his work In conclusion, Stuart is a talented physicist and a dedicated teacher". - Mary G Lawton - Head Mistress of the French International School (Hong Kong)

Everything you need to know about the MCAT

An Overview of the MCAT

WHY TAKE THE MCAT?

Most medical schools require the MCAT. At most U.S. medical schools, your MCAT score is given as much weight as your GPA.

HOW IS THE MCAT SCORED?

You will receive a total score for the three multiple-choice sections. Each of these sections is graded on a scale of 1 to 15.

Grades ranging from a low of J to a high of T, are also awarded for the Writing Section.

HOW LONG IS THE MCAT?

The test consists of 3 hours and 20 minutes of multiple-choice testing, plus one hour devoted to a writing sample. With all of the administrative details and breaks, the exam can last for 5½ hours.

Click link below for details of each section of the MCAT

HOW DO I REGISTER FOR THE MCAT?

Students can register for the MCAT online via the Association of American Medical College's website.

DURING WHAT MONTHS CAN I TAKE THE MCAT IN 2013?

The MCAT will be offered 25 times during 2013 spread out over the following months (click link for more details):

JANUARY 2013 MCAT TEST DATES

There are two available dates in January 2013:

  • January 24 at 8:00 a.m.
  • January 26 at 1:00 p.m.

January is the ideal option for students who wish to take the earliest available test date. Taking the test in January permits enough time to re-take if necessary and still make the early admissions deadlines. January test dates are also ideal for out of school students who have completed their prerequisites and are taking an interim year before matriculating into medical school or for students who attend schools that give a long break between fall and spring semesters. January test takers should start preparing in September with the start of the fall semester.
